Went bowling last night with Tracey, chrismaverick, and beststephi.

our scores:

BowlerGame 1Game 2Game 3Total

Congratulations to Mav, who had the highest score for the night without realizing it, and without winning a single game.

I blame an old hockey and/or rugby injury for my poor play in the second game.

oh, I knew I would have the highest score. Steph asked me who had the highest average and I told her I was sure that I did. I just found it all the more irritating that despite that, I didn't win a game.

I took a bowling class a month or so ago. 1 evening a week, 4 weeks, 40 bucks total. At the end of the class, each student got a bowling ball and a bag. If you figure in the fact that we each got two games per evening and free shoe rental, it was totally worth it even if we showed no improvement.

The course was mostly populated by teenagers, and the instructor spent most of his time with them. We didn't envy them much (having already recognized the bargain we were getting.) The guy gave me enough value just for these two tips:

1) Don't use your arm to hurl the ball, but rather, direct the energy you're already giving it just by moving toward the foul line. By lifting it off the ground you've added some energy to the equation, and by moving forward on your feet you're adding more. Learn to consistently direct all that energy so that once the ball leaves your hand, it's going where you want it to go.

2) Use a ball that is heavier than you think you should be using. I used a 10 when I started the class. He said that he would order a ball one weight heavier than we thought we wanted, so I ended up with a 14. You get used to the extra weight without worrying about it.
