"[O]nce approved and safely on the books, the amendment will have the
distinction of being the dumbest addition to the Constitution since the geniuses in Congress outlawed booze."
- Christopher Orlet in
Salon Premium, on the proposed Constitutional amendment to allow the phrase "One nation, under God" to appear in the Pledge of Allegiance.
The article it appeared in is about the man who wrote the original pledge, which didn't include any reference to God (that was put there in the 1950s during the nationwide hysteria about Godless Communists, but I'm sure Americans today are just as terrified of the, uh, Godless Religious Fanatics of al qaida)- a Socialist minister. Apparently this was before socialists and liberals in general started to hate America so much. It's available on my subscription to Salon, which is totally worth the money unless you're happy with the mainstream media with its, uh, Liberal bias that is somehow completely pro-Bush and anti-Civil Liberties yet still liberal.
