my power went out 3 times last night.
this makes 2 thoughts occur to me. first, my UPS should really have a switch somewhere to shut off its annoying alarm. my air conditioner and HEPA filter shutting down probably would've awakened me anyway, but that loud beeping to tell me my power went off it really unnecessary, since the outages each lasted like 5 seconds and there was absolutely no need for me to know about them. If I'd cared enough to get up to shut down my computer, I never would've got to it before the power came back on anyway. And the one time there was an outage that lasted long enough to matter (a couple of days, in fact), the alarm was even more annoying, because when I shut down my iMac and used it just to power my DSL modem and hub (connected to my laptop with a really long ethernet cable), the beeping sound from the other room, even with the door closed, was so distracting that I didn't want to use the damn computer.
the second thought was that i should really get another UPS, and plug my microwave and stereo into it. Now I don't think that I could actually power either device when it was on for long enough for it to be useful, but it would save me the mild annoyance of having to reset their clocks every time the power goes out. Ok, actually I really shouldn't do that, as the 10 seconds of effort isn't worth a couple of hundred dollars, but it is annoying. grrr.
