another photo project to fail to complete [Jun. 9th, 2009|10:03 am]

[mood | tired]

After utterly failing to string together 365 photos of myself in a row for several years now, I'm going to try to do a mere 4 projects in the Strobist Boot Camp II

I'm off to the Bay Area for the week to be trained to use software for work that I could've written myself in the time it's taken from when we signed the contract to buy it and when they scheduled our training and will finally let us use it.

I'm fairly certain Zoë doesn't understand that she's not going to see me for a week. This morning I told her "Daddy is going away and won't be around for the next few days," and she replied "Mama. Zo-Zo." Hopefully she'll remember who I am when I get back.

Ok, I'm officially beginning my 5th attempt at the whole 365 Days thing as of yesterday's photo. In accordance with the Law of Fives, this one should be successful.

Unless of course I start to feel less guilty about not actually making an effort while continuing to admin the group.

blah. I finally gave up the illusion that I was actually doing 365 Days; I'm to the point where I was taking a last minute mediocre snapshot of myself every few days if I bothered to get around to it, and I really don't like looking at myself enough to put more effort than that into it.

wtf?? [Apr. 11th, 2007|10:22 am]

Reuters is reporting that the Bush Administration wants to hire a "czar" who reports directly to the President and National Security Adviser to run the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, with the authority to "issue directions" to the Pentagon and the State Department.

Why question is: why the hell didn't they just hire someone better as Defense Secretary if Gates isn't able to manage the wars himself. For that matter, if Bush isn't fit to be the Commander In Chief of the freakin' military, why the hell doesn't he just resign instead of trying to get someone else to do the job for him? And aren't the Joint Chiefs capable of running the military without an extra layer of bureaucracy at the top? How incompetent does an administration need to be to require a complete reorganization every so often?

It was dumb enough that they needed an Intelligence Czar to oversee all of the government's intelligence workers when the freakin' CIA was specifically created to do just that. Is "Director Of Central Intelligence" too confusing of a title, or do these morons just really love Russian monarchy so much that they need a "czar" for everything?

Penguins magic number [Mar. 20th, 2007|12:19 pm]

[mood | optimistic]

The Penguins need just 9 points in their last 9 games to clinch a playoff spot for the first time since Jaromir Jagr left the team. Annoyingly, Jagr himself scored last night to take away the 1 minimum point they were 33.8 seconds away from earning. Fortunately, the Penguins only have 1 game left against a team that's got more points than they do this season, and all of the teams fighting for the last playoff spot in the conference have more difficult schedules than the Penguins, so it's likely that they could make the playoffs playing considerably worse than .500 hockey for the rest of the season. Not that it would be encouraging to go into the postseason with a losing streak, mind you.

More disappointing about last night's loss was that a win would have put the Pens into a tie with New Jersey for 1st place in the Atlantic Division, which seemed like an almost unachievable goal just last week, when New Jersey had an 8-point lead in the division race.

Happy Great Americans Day! [Mar. 9th, 2007|01:53 pm]

[music |Green Day-American Idiot]

As a great American myself (OK, Pitt doesn't actually call it that anymore; a few years ago they changed the name to "Spring Holiday" to be "more accurate and descriptive" despite the fact that this holiday will never ever occur in the Spring), I didn't have to work today.

I finally got around to catching up on uploading my 365 Days pictures for the past few days (and one from several weeks ago that somehow I never uploaded before, probably because the only picture I took of myself that day was pretty crappy even by my standards, but I took the time today to photoshop it into something that almost, but not quite, looks like I was trying to do something artistic) and changing my official homepage which used to be hosted on my own machine with actual content, then just redirected to my livejournal, and which most recently was an awful empty Google Pages template with literally no text at all on it to something semi-useful with links to the many places on the web where I might actually add some sort of content.

And I still have a couple of hours of great Americanness to kill before I have to go pick up Tracey and Zoë. Whee.

Imagine my surprise last night to see it snowing outside when it was 57 degrees out. And my even greater suprise to see heavy show on my car this morning despite the 53 degree low.

Looks like I'm giving up the last non-Flickr Yahoo service I was still using; these people are completely incompetent. (And yes, I checked weather.com to see if they were just being fed a completely wrong forecast--weather.com had the actual weather listed just fine)

After 2 (3? 4? I honestly have no idea) seasons of being absolutely horrible at fantasy football, I'm once again the champion of my league. In the final game, I was projected to lose by 16 points (due to my players being on real NFL teams that are so good that they didn't want to risk playing their good players in the last week before the playoffs), and I managed to pull off a stunning 107-101 upset victory over the Well Hungarians, putting on end to their 9-game winning streak and avenging a humiliating 50-point loss in Week 14.

There was much rejoicing at the Woobledome.
